Getting to Know The Checksheet
A checksheet is similar to a checklist and contains all the subjects on a student’s curriculum and detailed study assignments under each subject.
Most students in grades 1st through 6th have their work assignments provided as worksheets contained within the body of their work binder. The work binder is indexed with the student’s specific subjects clearly marked and readily accessible. The checksheet provides the instructions for each subject.
Students in grades 7th through 12th receive both textbooks and worksheets. Their work binder is indexed as well, but their work assignments may guide them to chapters in the textbooks in addition to worksheets contained within the binder.
In either case, the instructions for work assignments are given on a subject-by-subject basis and are easy to follow and clearly stated. The checksheet essentially consolidates these instructions, and allows a space for the student to sign-off the completion of the work assignment.
Checksheets and additional worksheets (where required) are mailed to you on a monthly basis, immediately following the Academy’s receipt of the tuition payment for that month. It is imperative that the student follow the instructions and complete the assignments detailed on each monthly checksheet. The student may study at her/his own pace, however, you should guard that this is not translated by the student as “may study whenever I feel like it.” A student-based pace means that the student is able to work at a pace determined by her/his own capabilities, not necessarily by her/his whims, and there is a crucial difference between the two. It is essential we receive monthly packages of work completed.
As a parent, you can determine your child’s progress by doing quick reviews of the work assignments checked off on the checksheet, and comparing this with actual work completed, of which you should be able to see physical evidence (i.e., assignments written out and done by the student). You do NOT have to grade the work. We do this for you. But you should check periodically to ensure that work is being done. The ease of the checksheet in guiding a student in study assignments should allow you to do this from a supervisory capacity only.
Although we send you monthly work assignments (checksheets) along with worksheets or additional texts (when required by the assignments), a student is not considered to be complete with her/his work until all assignments are turned in and graded. Hence, the requirement that work completed be mailed in monthly. To complete a grade level or scholastic year, the student must have completed all assignments, and turned them in for grading no later than June 1st of any given year. Assignments turned in after this deadline, are graded and made an official part of a student’s record only if tuition is paid for an additional month(s) required to bring the student’s records up-to-date.
We make every effort to keep the student “on target.” However, the student must complete assignments in order to complete a grade level.
Finally, please remember that Progress Reports will be sent to you monthly once we begin receiving completed work assignments. This helps to keep you abreast of your child’s grades and progress.
